Family Group intial layout sketch

Family Group part way through Family Group completed I'm not sure whether it was the change of environment or lifestyle after moving to New Zealand, but I was compelled to try new things.

It wasn't long before stone carving took over everything else.  This medium fascinated me. I found the process absorbing and exhilarating.

I'm inspired by the fantastic surroundings on our doorstep and when starting a new piece of sculpture I'm totally carried away with the excitement of it.

I carve directly and intuitively, being guided by the stone. I usually sketch initial ideas then transfer the shapes into the stone following the natural form and features.  Curves form a huge part of my sculptures and paintings. I love the organic shapes that can be achieved when working with limestone.

I begin a relationship with the stone once I decide to work with it.  When I start removing material, it feels like I go to a different place and my subconcious takes over..... This is a special time for me and like reading a good book, I don't want it to end.

"Sculpture is to me part of who I am and I feel so very lucky to have discovered this art form"

I hope you enjoy looking at my work as much as I've enjoyed producing it.
